What would happen if you dared to understand love – love, that is, between people of the same sex? Kika’s book explores this question with honesty and from the point of view of a Cuban immigrant. Originally written in Spanish and then translated into English, the book opens with a story of a friend’s son who took his life because of his sexual identity – a truth he could not deny and yet could not live with because of his family’s disapproval. This inspired Kika to examine her own beliefs and seek out answers from people who everyday live in fear and shame because of social and cultural beliefs that condemn them for who they are. Through interviews, Kika invites them to share openly. Her obvious warmth and interest in hearing their story enables each person to reveal themselves. And they do, sharing stories of terrible injustices, severe abuse, and painful family circumstances that haunt them. Despite hearing many heart wrenching stories, Kika is hopeful about the future of the LGBT community. Her message is simple: listen to others; love others as they are; and never forsake our children.
